News from the MCC Toronto Board of Directors

As part of our commitment to more regular, transparent and timely communication with the Congregation we want to highlight some of our recent activities. We meet bi-monthly and will provide you with the key points arising from our meetings. In addition, on our Board website, you can find a variety of Board documents and congregational communications.

November 12, 2017: Town Hall

We had another successful town hall meeting that provided an opportunity to update congregants and answer their questions about the senior pastor integration process and our current financial situation.  Aleks Dughman-Manzur, leader of our outstanding Refugee Ministry, also provided an informative overview of the services offered and challenges faced in this important area of our work.

Decision-making model

We had further discussions regarding how we can best implement our goal of ensuring there is increased clarity about decision making: identifying if people/roles are being informed, consulted, or responsible for decision-making. We will strive to incorporate more clarity in our committee reports – particularly identifying items that require Board approval.

 Senior pastor transition process

We continue to be pleased with the integration of Jeff into our leadership and the preparation for Brent’s retirement. We are energized by the wisdom and insight that Jeff has demonstrated in his early days with us and Brent’s commitment to mentoring and transferring 40 years of experience, institutional memory, and relationships.

Jeff’s installation will be January 21st and Brent will officially step down on January 28th.  Both services will be landmark occasions for MCC Toronto and we encourage you to attend in person if possible, and if not, to join us on-line.

Jeff is working with the MCC denomination to complete the requirements to officially become an accredited MCC Pastor. The formal requirements will be done prior to the next MCC conference and in no way limit Jeff’s ability to serve as our senior pastor.

If feedback is provided to other members of the staff (including Brent) we will ask them to re-direct the input to Andrew and Lori so we have one central source for reviewing the feedback.  As always, feedback is most helpful when it is honest, objective, specific and given with an intent to be helpful.

2018 budget was approved

The Board requested that the 2018 budget include funds to facilitate salary increases for the first time in several years. We have not budgeted for salary increases in the past several years as we attempted to deal with the challenge of balancing revenues and expenses. We have also recognized that prudent financial planning means we need to acknowledge the likelihood of higher expenses related to repairs and maintenance of our grand old building. Ultimately, we felt we needed to make significant investments which led to a planned $54,000 deficit. We can address this 2018 planned deficit by accessing some surpluses from previous years. This is a one-time solution and we will need to continue our focus on wise expense management and revenue generation.

2018 Board objectives

Critical to our success this year will be our active and varied actions required in supporting and managing the transition of Jeff becoming our new senior pastor. In addition, a key MCC Toronto priority in 2018 is ensuring various teams and ministry areas have completed their Community Framework documents. The Board will contribute to this priority by ensuring our key resource documents are identified, secured, and accessible.
